E-Bikes, E-Bike Share Included in Latest Round of Air Resources Board Clean Mobility Options Funding

November 30, 2018/by Kevin Claxton

In late October the California Air Resources Board (ARB) approved its 2018-19 Funding Plan for Clean Transportation Incentives. This round continues to support transportation equity projects, including funds for much-needed projects that include bicycle and electric bicycle sharing. CalBike has been advocating for this from the beginning, and the Air Resources Board was clearly listening. […]

Support CalBike on #GivingTuesday

November 16, 2018/by Laura McCamy

While you’re giving thanks this holiday, consider hosting a Facebook fundraiser to support CalBike on #GivingTuesday.

Why host a Facebook fundraiser today instead of tomorrow or next month?
On November 27, 2018, nonprofits using Facebook to fundraise pay no fee—100{850a63fa8a72bae4d6bfa3f1eda9f619cddace10f9053ede128e2914f9ca5a15} of gifts will go directly to CalBike, and Facebook will match all contributions up to $7 million. That match isn’t all for us, but we’d love for supporters to take advantage of this great opportunity by:

  • Adding a donate button to your post
  • Hosting a fundraiser on Facebook for CalBike

To add a donate button to your post, click What’s on your mind? on your News Feed or timeline and then follow one of these options:

  • Tag the nonprofit, click Post and then click Add Button to confirm that you want to add a donate button.
  • Click Feeling/Activity and scroll down to click Supporting. Select a nonprofit, click Post and then click Add Button to confirm that you want to add the donate button to your post.

Watch this short video tutorial on adding buttons

Alternatively, host a fundraiser

  1. Click Fundraisers in the left menu of your News Feed.
  2. Click Raise Money.
  3. Select Nonprofit/Charity.
  4. Select a charitable organization, choose a cover photo and fill in the fundraiser details.
  5. Click Create.

Watch this short video tutorial to help set up your campaign

We hope #GivingTuesday is a chance for you to tell your friends how important biking is to you (and how much you save on gas by pedaling to the grocery store!)

Happy Thanksgiving and see you in the bike lane,

Minnie

Voters Back Sustainable Transportation

November 9, 2018/by Zac

With record turnout for a midterm election, it’s clear that the voters of California knew how important this opportunity was to choose the policies and leaders that will move us forward and not hold us back.

Across our state, voters protected critical transportation funding and projects by rejecting the cynical attack of Proposition 6.

CalBike campaigned hard to defeat Proposition 6, which would have repealed the gas and diesel taxes funding critical safety and maintenance improvements across the state. We leveraged the reach of our local partners and reached our tens of thousands of followers with a simple message: the vital work on neighborhood projects our partners have pushed so hard for, and the statewide work that our team devotes so much to, depend upon the defeat of Proposition 6. After troubling late polling and a huge push by the opposition, Prop 6 lost by nearly a million votes and 11 percentage points.

Voters supported our recommendation on Proposition 1, a $4b bond for affordable housing, but disagreed with our position on Proposition 10, the removal of state limits on local rent control. We’ll keep working for truly affordable housing accessible in every community, so that all of California’s neighborhoods can be equitable, inclusive, prosperous, and full of bicycles.

Voters also supported many candidates who shared our vision for a more equitable future where transportation policy enables more people to experience the health and joy of biking. Our efforts made a huge difference in at least four races, two of which are still too close to call: our endorsed candidate Anna Caballero (SD 12, Merced) looks likely to win, while candidates Sabrina Cervantes (AD 60, Corona/Inland Empire) and Christy Smith (AD 38, Santa Clarita/Simi Valley) are behind. In Carlsbad, we threw our support behind Tasha Boerner Horvath who campaigned boldly on a pro-bike agenda and won with 56% of the vote.

Our State Assembly endorsees David Chiu, Phil Ting, Marc Berman, Laura Friedman, Adrin Nazarian, and Richard Bloom all return to Sacramento with our strong support to continue their proven and promised work. While they ran surprising and dynamic races, we look forward to seeing what future opportunities we’ll have to work with Senate candidates Mike Eng (San Gabriel Valley) and Joy Silver (Coachella Valley), who faced powerful incumbents and lost in close races (with 48% and 46% of the vote, respectively).

These newly elected and re-elected leaders have tremendous implications for CalBike’s efforts. We look forward to their support this year and beyond; of our Complete Streets campaign, of our upcoming legislative priorities, and our work across the state advocating for equitable communities where bicycling helps enable Californian’s to lead healthy and joyful lives.

We’ll follow up with more detailed analyses of the results and what they mean for the year ahead, so make sure to keep up with us here and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Prop 6 Doesn’t Just Undermine Our Infrastructure

November 6, 2018/by Zac

In a season of scary politics, one of the scariest measures on the ballot is California’s Proposition 6. If it passes, not only will it hurt us immediately by halting thousands of road safety projects, it will also indicate the dominance of a very dangerous and deep cynicism about the value of public works.

California’s transportation system is huge. Based primarily around privately-owned automobiles, it is expensive to maintain. It is falling apart. Bridges are unsafe. Legislators came together last year and hammered out a compromise to pay for that system that relies on a mixed package of fees and taxes and also slowly steers California’s transportation system in a more sustainable direction. It’s too slow for our liking, but at least it’s going in the right direction; the most recent transportation budget has a highest proportion ever of funds for transit, biking, and walking.

Prop 6 would repeal those funds. More than six thousand projects would be halted or delayed. Community-led efforts to make the streets safer for walking and riding bikes would be canceled. New pedestrian ramps for better accessibility in Burbank, bike lanes along Telegraph Ave in Oakland, upgrading 45 Foothill Transit gas buses with zero-emission electric models, Caltrain’s electrification + Bike Parking program, BART finally extending into San Jose…

Worse, the idea that we shouldn’t protect our public infrastructure with public funds as determined by our elected representatives is a very dangerous idea that we cannot endorse. The alternative is to turn to private business to maintain our infrastructure, so that only the roads that turn a profit are maintained and the rest crumble. Only the rich get to travel, and the rest of us, including those of us who choose to or must rely on the affordable bicycle to get around, are left to fend for ourselves in the dangerous margins.

Our democratic system is far from perfect, but it’s the best one we have and it’s the only equitable way to maintain our public infrastructure. Protect our roads. Protect our safety. Protect our public transportation system. Stop Prop 6.

2018 Dream Ride Recap

November 5, 2018/by Zac

The 2018 Dream Ride has come and gone, but we’re still enjoying the post ride buzz. Didn’t snag a spot this year? Don’t fret: Registration for 2019’s ride through Northern California is open! We hope you can join us for another year of unforgettable bicycling.

Here’s a recap of 2018:

Beautiful Tour

This year, we were blessed with the best weather imaginable. Palm trees lined the horizon and the coastline followed us the entire route. We overnighted in six beautiful and unique cities: Santa Barbara, Santa Paula, Marina del Rey, Long Beach, San Clemente and San Diego. There were views you could never see from inside a car!

Great people

Going into our fifth Dream Ride, we were excited to have a great group of new and repeat riders. Our riders were full of energy and enthusiasm. Some chose to form challenge groups – taking on higher altitudes and more distances. Others took their time enjoying the delicious snacks and breathtaking views at a leisurely pace. No matter the speed, we all felt like a family.

Awesome Cause

Breathtaking views, semi-luxurious accommodations, and a truly worthwhile cause—this year we raised over $130,000 to support better bicycling and thriving communities across the Golden State. One of our Dream Riders, Lee Larsen, chronicled her journey on social media every day and raised an additional $1900 during the ride!

A Little Extra Zip from Gazelle Bikes

Special thanks to our generous sponsor, Gazelle Bikes, for supplying e-bikes for riders to try out or to use for the entire ride. We had the company of Gabe and Paul from Gazelle to charge batteries, adjust seats, and change pedals. They had an assortment of bikes, from speedy commuters to stylish cruisers. We were truly spoiled!

Want more Dream Ride photos? Photographer Allan Crawford captured some great moments here.

We hope you enjoyed this recap! We’d love your company in wine country next year! Stay tuned for news about dates, locations and registration.

Happy riding!
