The California Bicycle Coalition is asking the California Air Resources Board to expand their incentive programs to include the cleanest vehicle of all: the bicycle. The ARB funds the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program and similar state programs to help people replace high-polluting cars with electric cars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but they don’t have any programs to encourage bicycle riding. CalBike proposes to change that with a $10 million Bicycle Purchase Incentive Pilot Program.
We believe that bike repair shops are essential businesses that need to stay open during California’s shelter in place order. Biking is one of the safest ways to get around and comply with health officials’ request to maintain social distance. People who choose to bike rather than take transit leave room on trains and buses, so those who do need to ride can do so safely. But, to keep California rolling, we need our bike shops to help with necessary repairs. Please sign our letter to the State Public Health Commissioner.
A new bicycle awareness California license plate will raise money to support bicycle programs. The cost for this special plate for your car is $50 – $103 the first year and $35 – $73 for renewals. We need 7,500 pre-orders before September 2020 to ensure that DMV will launch this plate. You can pre-order the license plate for your motor vehicle today. As soon as the DMV gets 7,500 orders, they will begin production.
The Dutch Reach is a safer way for drivers and passengers to open car doors. Every year, thousands of bike riders are injured and even killed when drivers fling open car doors in their paths. CalBike’s bill, SB 945, will require the DMV to teach California drivers the Dutch Reach. This technique has drivers open car doors with their right hands, which forces them to look for bikes.
