Preserving Safe Bikeways – Support SB 569

SB 569

California communities are investing in safer streets, but in some cities, newly installed bikeways have been threatened with removal after political backlash.

SB 569 authored by Senator Catherine Blakespear would create a clear public process, and a higher standard before a local agency can remove an existing bikeway, requiring safety analysis, Level of Traffic Stress analysis, public findings, and a community comment period. The bill helps ensure decisions about bikeway removals are based on safety, transparency, and the needs of all road users. CalBike is sponsoring SB 569 because once communities invest in safer streets, those safety gains should not be erased without thorough review and analysis, public accountability, and a full understanding of the risks to people biking, walking, and rolling.
