2024 California Bicycle Summit to Be Held by the San Diego Bay

We are delighted to announce the venue for the 2024 California Bicycle Summit, to be held in San Diego on April 18-19, 2024. Meetings will be held at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside, located at 1355 North Harbor Drive.

Located between Little Italy and San Diego’s historic and very walkable Gaslamp District, the Wyndham is near the waterfront and a ferry to Coronado. Explore San Diego by the convenient nearby transit or rent a bike at Wheel Fun Rentals next to the hotel. Other nearby amenities include an electric car charging station and a variety of restaurants and pubs.

How to get there

The Wyndham is easily accessible by local bus or trolley. If you travel to San Diego on Amtrak, the train station where the Pacific Surfliner drops you off is less than half a mile away. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle from the airport that runs every half hour.

If you drive, you can pay for parking in the hotel garage, whether or not you’re a hotel guest. And, for those who arrive by bike, we will provide valet bike parking at the Wyndham.

Where to stay

You can book a room at the Wyndham with a conference discount. After you register, you’ll receive information on how to book at the conference rate. There are also several other hotels within easy walking distance of the venue. 

To make the Summit as accessible as possible, we will also have a limited number of spaces available to stay with local CalBike members. If you’d like to request a homestay, fill out this application. If you can host an attendee, please fill out a homestay host form.

What to do at the Summit

We’re working on an exciting program, with sessions covering a diverse range of topics, including state legislation, local action, innovative funding sources for active transportation projects, and much more. Planners, agency representatives, advocates, and thought leaders on active transportation will present ideas from across California and beyond. Look for more information on the sessions soon.

While you’re at the California Bicycle Summit, you can also experience the city’s amenities on several biking and walking tours. And there are numerous restaurants nearby, including three in the hotel and many different cuisines in the surrounding neighborhoods, plus lots of other fun activities in sunny San Diego.

California Bicycle Summit Advance Session Generates Excitement About San Diego Bikeways

More than 100 people attended CalBike’s first Summit Advance Session on November 29, 2023. The webinar featured a panel of advocates and planners from San Diego, where the in-person California Bicycle Summit will be held on April 18-19, 2024. 

The Summit will be jam-packed with panels and keynotes, advancing the latest thinking on active transportation advocacy and planning. The webinar highlighted another reason to go to San Diego: a chance to tour the city’s growing miles of separated bikeways. 

The session included advocacy strategies from Chloé Lauer, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition executive director, and Anar Salayev, executive director of BikeSD. Josh Clark, a senior regional planner for the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), detailed the agency’s progress in building 77 miles of bikeways and dramatic increases in ridership after the opening of protected and separated bikeways. 

The COO and CDO of Circulate San Diego, Jeremy Bloom, talked about strategies to advance Vision Zero, including identifying the Fatal 15: the most dangerous intersections in the city. Everett Hauser, the City of San Diego Transportation Department’s bicycle program manager, outlined improvements, especially since the Summit was last held in San Diego in 2015. Randy Torres-Van Vleck, CEO of Tocayo Engagement and organizer of Los Cruzadores, spoke about San Diego’s role as a crossroads between the U.S. and Mexico and his hopes to organize a repeat of a 2015 cross-border ride for April’s Summit attendees.

CalBike Announces 2024 California Bicycle Summit, Advance Sessions

CalBike will hold its next biennial California Bicycle Summit in San Diego on April 18 to 19, 2024. The Summit is an inspiring gathering of advocates, planners, transportation agency staffers, and elected officials who care about creating a more bikeable, walkable California. Sessions will include presentations and workshops from some of the most influential thought leaders in active transportation and transportation justice, leading discussions on how we transition to a more just, sustainable transportation system. And no Summit would be complete without bike tours, networking opportunities, movie screenings, and more.

A crossroads for climate and livability

This is a crucial time for the active transportation movement. As the pace of climate change accelerates and damage from severe weather accumulates, our window to decarbonize our transportation system shrinks. Our Summit theme for 2024 is Crossroads, because our state and our society stand at a crossroads. 

We can choose the path of adaptation and mitigation, or keep building freeways as the planet heats. We can walk toward more just and sustainable systems for bringing safety to our streets, or we can continue down the path that leaves many Californians unsafe when they bike and walk. As we gather together at the Summit, we’ll strategize how to move California toward a more equitable and sustainable future.

2024 Summit Advance Session: Success Stories from San Diego

In the months leading up to the 2024 California Bicycle Summit, we will host a series of free online webinars to preview topics to be discussed at the in-person event. The first webinar focuses on our host city and the challenges that advocates and local agencies have overcome to win some important victories. These success stories will offer suggestions for accelerating change in your community.

#CABikeSummit: the View from Twitter

On October 15-17, 300 bicycle advocates, government officials, and planners gathered for the 2019 California Bicycle Summit. Participants recorded their reactions to the workshops, plenaries, and tours on Twitter. These #CABikeSummit tweets are a good way to view a cross-section of the Summit.

#1: The most liked tweet was an appropriately angry comment by Bike East Bay’s Robert Prinz in response to the very first speaker our Board Chair Cynthia Rose introduced. Its thread included a shout out to a later speaker, Assembly Member Laura Friedman, who said, “Caltrans needs an awakening if they think that moving Amazon packages is somehow more important than moving children safely through our streets.”

#13: Art Ramirez invited the summit goers to his birthday party so our Executive Director took him up on the offer, joining them for a ride from South LA to downtown taking over the streets and protected bike lanes with gorgeous bikes and joyful faces.
