We Support Better Street Design
All over California, local leaders are ready to build bike lanes to connect the people of their community, but they are stopped by Caltrans’ out-of-date rules about street design. Where Caltrans has influence on a street, its project planners will insist on wide, freeway-style lanes for fast traffic, the opportunities to add space for safe bicycling. It’s also a problem when local engineer rely on Caltrans rules for their own streets (even though they don’t have to).
CalBike has asked the new Director at Caltrans to update their design manual to provide true flexibility to design safer roads for biking and walking. We look forward to Mr. Omishakin’s response and to working with the agency to make this technical change that could have profound impact.
