AB 1557 and AB 1942
Update: AB 1557 and AB 1942 Failed to Advance
For over a decade, electric bicycles have been a critical part of addressing California’s transportation and climate challenges. E-bikes increase access to bicycling for people who might otherwise not ride, helping more Californians replace car trips, connect to transit, carry kids, commute to work, and move through their communities with greater freedom.
AB 1557 and AB 1942 failed to pass out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee and will not move forward this year. This is an important win for everyone who depends on safe, legal e-bikes.
CalBike opposed these bills because they would have limited access to legal electric bikes while failing to address the real problem: high-powered e-motos being falsely advertised and sold as “e-bikes.” California should focus on regulating, educating, and enforcing laws against deceptive advertising and illegal use of e-motos, rather than creating new barriers for people riding legal e-bikes.
Thank you to everyone who spoke up. Your advocacy helped protect access to safe, legal e-bikes in California.
