CalBike Endorses Mike Eng for SD 22

March 11, 2018/by Zac

Vote for Mike Eng for Senate

One of two bike-friendly candidates for this seat, Mike Eng deserves your vote for his commitment not just to bicycling but to the related issues around air pollution and affordable housing that make life easier for people who ride bikes.

Senate District 22 serves the cities and communities of the San Gabriel Valley, which include: Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, El Monte, Baldwin Park, Irwindale, West Covina, Azusa, Temple City, and Arcadia. Getting around these communities is not easy without a car, but Mike Eng still understands “we need to do more to make the true cost of fossil fuel vehicles apparent to consumers”. This can be conceived as politically controversial, but such a bold stance on reducing Vehicle Miles Travelled really shows the depth and aptitude for a strong forward-looking Senator that sees the interaction between transportation and the housing and environmental crises. SD 22 is also home to many low-income communities that bike or walk daily as a form of transportation. Mike understands that the district’s most vulnerable populations are “impacted first and worst and are ideally the communities that should be the first beneficiaries”.

The rest of Mike’s questionnaire responses are impressive for its breadth and depth of knowledge. For these reasons, we are excited to see Mike emerge as a prominent candidate in the SD 22 race, and we look forward to seeing him provide the leadership needed to work toward safer and more sustainable transportation alternatives for all of the district’s residents.
