BUILD BIKE HIGHWAYS

California needs connected, protected bike networks.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

The Bike Highways Bill, AB 954

California has an extensive (and growing) highway system for cars. At CalBike, we think it’s time to create systems of connected, protected networks to allow people on bikes to swiftly and safely reach popular destinations.

CalBike is sponsoring the Bike Highways Bill, AB 954, which would create a pilot program at Caltrans to build bike highways in two California cities, building on existing bicycle infrastructure to create the connected transportation networks we need to make the bicycle a truly efficient and appealing way to get around.

Connected, protected bikeway networks — bike highways — will make biking a comfortable way to get around for Californians of all ages and abilities.

WHAT WE’RE FIGHTING FOR

Bike highways are a powerful tool to fight climate change.

As the threat of climate disaster grows exponentially each year, California must change its transportation systems. Electric cars are a good step, but they aren’t enough to solve the climate crisis.

We must give Californians real transportation choices. Bike highways are an excellent way to do that.

Bike highways will create routes where people can get where they need to go quickly by bike, making biking an excellent alternative to bumper-to-bumper traffic. The protected bikeways of a bike highway network will encourage more people to get around by bike, safe from traffic violence.

In addition, bike highways may provide critical escape routes in the face of escalating natural disasters. Bikes can be an efficient mode for moving many people quickly away from danger, free from traffic jams.
