Bike Highways Linking California Regions
California has an extensive (and growing) highway system for cars. At CalBike, we think it’s time to create systems of connected, protected networks to allow people on bikes to swiftly and safely reach popular destinations.
CalBike sponsoedg the Bike Highways Bill, AB 954, which would have add bike highways to state transportation planning, encouraging local and regional governments to build on existing bicycle infrastructure andto create the connected transportation networks we need to make the bicycle a truly efficient and appealing way to get around.
Connected, protected bikeway networks — bike highways — will make biking a comfortable way to get around for Californians of all ages and abilities.
TAKE ACTION
The 2025 Bike Highways Bill was pulled by the author, Assemblymember Steve Bennett. He intends to introduce a more targeted bill next year with specific budget asks to complete a bike highway in his district. We appreciate Assemblymember Bennett’s strong leadership on bike highways and the efforts of thousands of CalBike supporters who took action to try and pass this bill. CalBike looks forward to working on the next bike highways bill and helping to build more fast, safe, bike networks that connect communities.
Our Summit Session on bike highways covered the legislation and much more. Watch now.
WHAT WE’RE FIGHTING FOR
Bike highways are a powerful tool to fight climate change.
As the threat of climate disaster grows exponentially each year, California must change its transportation systems. Electric cars are a good step, but they aren’t enough to solve the climate crisis.
We must give Californians real transportation choices. Bike highways are an excellent way to do that.
Bike highways will create routes where people can get where they need to go quickly by bike, making biking an excellent alternative to bumper-to-bumper traffic. The protected bikeways of a bike highway network will encourage more people to get around by bike, safe from traffic violence.
In addition, bike highways may provide critical escape routes in the face of escalating natural disasters. Bikes can be an efficient mode for moving many people quickly away from danger, free from traffic jams.
