  • California Bicycle Summit

    October 3-6, 2017

    Sacramento Convention Center
    Sacramento, CA

The 2017 California Bicycle Summit is our biannual gathering of a diverse group of people from around the state—and around the world!— including bicycle advocates, planners, bicycle industry representatives, elected officials, and activists for racial, gender, and economic equity. In 2015 at our summit in San Diego participants shared their successes and challenges in promoting equity and community building through bicycling; planners and policymakers shared exciting changes afoot in the private and public sectors; and all of us participated in challenging discussions on how the bicycle advocacy movement can better include and benefit California’s diverse communities.

  • 2017 Bicycle Dreamer Awards

bikehallW.jpgCalifornia Bicycle Coalition’s annual Bicycle Dreamer Award goes to a visionary whose achievements have advanced our common dream: that one day soon all Californians will be able to ride bicycles safely and conveniently wherever they wish to go, and that, as a result, all our communities will thrive. The award is given during our annual California Dream Ride.

Join us for a fun party and for the announcement of the winner of the California Bicycle Coalition's Bicycle Dreamer Award!

    The 2017 nominees are:

    Darell Dickey

Darell is a long-time member of the Davis Bike Club, and of the Bike Davis Executive Board. He created and helped implement bike theft prevention programs with the Bike Club, the City of Davis and UC Davis. Darell's passion is encouraging safer, more comfortable bicycling through infrastructure improvements and changes in the municipal code. He has been on the Bicycle Advisory Commission, and speaks at city council meetings and BAC meetings. He meets with Davis' mayor and council members privately, leads bicycle tours, works directly with our Public Works staff, and has provided input into our “Beyond Platinum” Bicycle Plan. Darell helped develop Davis' recently-adopted Street Standards, volunteers with the Davis Police Department on bicycle-related programs, and has led the push to rid our bike lanes of piles of yard trimmings throughout the city.

    Maria Contreras-Tebbutt
Going back more than decade, Maria was a lonesome voice for bike transportation in Woodland. Since, by her own endless supply of energy and enthusiasm, she’s founded Bike Garage (rehabs and sells discarded bikes) and Bike Campaign (programs to encourage to ride bikes safely). Now living in Davis, Maria is arguably the most visible bike advocate in the city. She and her husband are always agreeable to assist in any bike advocacy effort.

    John Whitehead
With a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and avid cyclist for decades, John has been the Media Liaison for the club for the past several years. He's served over a decade on the Yolo County Transportation Committee, representing cycling interests for Yolo County, and beyond. John's intellect is daunting, he can speak to any aspect of highway design and engineering that makes CalTrans experts sit in awe. He's best known for his "rumble strip" warnings, and how thoughtlessly designed rumble strips are a hazard for road cyclists.

John frequently writes "Letters to the Editor" on cycling related issues, he's appeared before public hearings on cycling matters at the county and city level for as long as anybody can remember. Finally, he shares his extraordinary expertise with club members using our e-mail list.

    John and Diane Swann
Selected together because they work so well as a team on all aspects of bike safety. As with any region where cycling is popular, intersections and roadways are more hazardous than others. John and Diane call public attention to these hazards. Cyclists are warned and cautioned, public officials, including law enforcement and public works are alerted and lobbied for correction.

    Russell Regan
While living in the Bay Area, Russell took an active role in the design and production of bike maps for cyclists. Later moving to Davis, Russell was a founding member of Bike Davis advocacy group and offered his unique talents in cartography. Devoting countless hours with no compensation and produced a revised Davis bike map that is distributed through the local bike club, bike retail shops, and the chamber of commerce.

We hope you can join us!

Wine will be provided, in addition to beer from Alpine Brewery (owned by Dream Riders!). Dinner will be provided by Davis' own Burgers and Brew.
