Rules of the Road - California Bicycle Coalition

Skill #2: Following the Rules of the Road

Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.

Bicyclists have the right to use the full lane in most circumstances, the right to use the left turn lane for left turns, and the responsibility to obey all traffic signs, signals and road markings. Operating your bike the way you drive your car is the easiest way to be safe in traffic because other drivers will see you.

In some areas, usually residential areas, you are allowed to ride on the sidewalk, but if you do, ride slowly, never impact pedestrians, and be prepared to yield to cars at every driveway and intersection.

Using Skills 2 + 1 can cut your injury risk by about 75%.
