Protected Bikeways Act Update
Nineteen bicycle advocacy organizations signed on to support the Protected Bikeways Act, AB 1193, our bill to encourage the development of protected bikeways throughout California. This consensus among advocates emphasizes how important protected bikeways are as a tool in the toolbox for city planners and engineers. AB 1193 passed the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on a 10-0 vote after a lengthy debate.
The bill calls for Caltrans to develop standards for protected bikeways in their design manual for the purpose of state-owned facilities and permits local agencies to rely on other standards for local facilities, such as those in NATCO’s Urban Bikeway Design Guide. The next step for the bill is Senate Appropriations where we will work to refine its language.
