Policy Associate - California Bicycle Coalition

Policy Associate

California Bicycle Coalition is hiring a Policy Associate

The California Bicycle Coalition, a statewide advocacy organization dedicated to enabling more people to bicycle in California, is seeking a new team member to support our Sacramento-based policy initiatives.

About the Position

Reporting to the Policy Director, the Policy Associate will support the development and implementation of our policy agenda, including new legislation and changes in administrative policy and practice. They will work with government agencies and elected officials, our allies, our members, and other stakeholders to develop consensus among varied interests and support for our policy proposals. The Policy Associate will research and analyze proposed policy changes, such as potential opportunities and benefits of equitable bike sharing systems, and quantification of the greenhouse gas emission reductions of bicycle infrastructure and incentive programs. The ideal candidate has experience in transportation, public health, sustainable community development, or a related field, is deeply committed to social equity, and can communicate effectively, both in writing and in person.

Immediately, our Policy Associate will support our campaigns to increase state funding for walking and bicycling projects, educational programs, and incentives to increase access to bicycles and bikeshare programs especially for low-income individuals. This work includes regular communication with our local partners on policy priorities as well as coordinating meetings and events around the state with our local partners to demonstrate the benefits of bicycling to policymakers.

About the California Bicycle Coalition

The California Bicycle Coalition is a fast-growing statewide advocacy association dedicated to enabling more people to bicycle in California. Our efforts are focused on the singular goal from our 2012 strategic plan: to double bicycling in California by 2020. We pursue four strategies to accomplish that goal: (1) build the infrastructure of networks of connected bikeways throughout the state so that people can easily bicycle for most trips under three miles; (2) make bicycling mainstream in all of California’s cultures; (3) improve legal protections for people who ride; and (4) strengthen local advocacy across the state. We work in coalition with statewide partners across transportation, land use, health, environment, and equity issue areas, and advance these strategies across California’s diverse communities in partnership with the state’s sixteen professionally-staffed bicycle advocacy organizations who are our formal affiliates.

Our main office and several staff are based in Oakland: our Executive Director, Communications and Development Director, and Office Manager. Our Policy Director is based in Sacramento, and we contract with a lobbyist in Sacramento as well as a media professional in Long Beach.

  • be based in Sacramento or nearby in order to facilitate frequent meetings in Sacramento.
  • have experience with policy advocacy and/or analysis, preferably in the field of transportation, land use, public health, or a related field.
