Better bikeway design bill passes the Senate
Assembly Bill 819, authored by Fremont Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski, will improve bikeway design in California by requiring Caltrans to implement an experimentation program for new designs. The goal is to develop standards that permit protected bikeways and other safer designs that will attract everyone from the age of 8 to 80 to bicycling.
As the primary sponsor of the bill, we’re now working with Caltrans to create an easy program for local agencies, with a simple form to submit and simple procedure to follow. If we find that the procedure deters agencies from building non-approved designs, we’ll go back to the Legislature next year with another bill and a strategy to avoid the opponents of protected bikeways.
