CalBike announces the route for the 2017 California Dream Ride
The 4th edition of California Dream Ride
is open for registration! This year we're showcasing a new route, moving out of Central and Southern California and into the rolling hills, farmland and vineyards of Northern California. The five-day, fully supported 280-mile tour from American River Parkway to the Golden Gate will raise money for CalBike as we visit the host cities of Folsom, Davis, Calistoga, Occidental, San Rafael and Oakland.
Beginning on October 9th in Folsom (riders and will staff arrive on the 8th for check-in and a welcome get together), cyclists will ride west along the American River Parkway (aka the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) for over 30 miles of vehicle-free riding before wrapping up the day in Davis, with a visit to the United States Bicycle Hall of Fame.
Rolling out of Davis on the 10th, Dream Riders will spend the next two days riding among the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma counties, passing through Zinfandel (of course!), St. Helena, Calistoga (on the second night), and Healdsburg. Lunches and the dinner on the second night will sample the cuisine and varietals that have made this region famous worldwide. The tour will spend its third night in Occidental, a quaint village nestled in the redwoods of Sonoma County. Dinner will be at a restaurant that’s been serving family-style Italian fare to locals and visitors since the 1940s.
On day four (October 12th), the tour turns due south with a day of riding along the coast and then through the redwood forest of Samuel P. Taylor park north of San Francisco. The day concludes with a visit to the Marin Museum of Bicycling and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in Fairfax.
Day five, the final day of riding, saves some of the best for last. Highlights include riding across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, through Golden Gate Park, and along San Francisco’s Embarcadero to a ferry ride across San Francisco Bay to CalBike’s headquarters in Oakland and a post-ride celebration aboard the USS Potomac at Jack London Square.

California Dream Ride
was conceived of by CalBike’s David Snyder and brought to life by Debbie Brubaker, the ride’s director. It is a fundraiser to support the Coalition’s statewide advocacy efforts and to raise awareness by showcasing the successes of statewide and local efforts to enhance bicycle infrastructure and to increase bicycle safety. The tour is fully supported—all riders do is ride! For the first time, 2017 California Dream Ride will use e-bikes to provide on-route support, including lunches.
